⁤Mr Ho Chee Hin, CEO of Business China, with over 25 years of experience across renowned institutions like Enterprise Singapore and the Ministry of Trade and Industry, brought valuable insights to a group of mentors and mentees who participated in the innovative mentorship initiative organized by the Singapore Mentorship Committee. ⁤

⁤Following several rounds of rotations of mentor-mentee pairings during our hike, we took a break, and Mr. Ho commenced his speech with reflections on his journey. ⁤⁤As a third-generation Singaporean, Mr. Ho initiated his career in the public sector and seized the opportunity to broaden his global perspective through assignments spanning the UK, China, Russia, Europe, and beyond. ⁤⁤These overseas experiences provided him with firsthand insights into diverse systems and cultures. ⁤For youths who are preparing to step into the real world, confused by economic shifts, rapid technological advancements, and an evolving geopolitical landscape, ⁤having such intercultural immersion and overseas exposure is vital.

Mr Ho pointed out the worries that individuals have about the world, where is their place in the world and how their careers will develop. To put it into context, Mr Ho mentioned that China is currently experiencing a slight economic downturn. Nonetheless, it achieved a growth rate of 5.2% last year which equaled the entirety of Switzerland's economy and nearly double of Singapore's. Thus, the growth is evident. Essentially, China can be viewed as a glass half empty or half full, depending on one's perspective. Despite its significant size and substantial growth, especially when compared to Singapore, the economy is not the same as before, causing widespread concern. However, it's crucial to consider the context amidst such apprehensions.

⁤Amid an unpredictable landscape, Mr. Ho reassured that Asia, especially Southeast Asia, will persist as a hub of growth and opportunities. ⁤⁤He emphasized the potential of the younger generation to flourish and propel regional development amidst challenging times. ⁤⁤However, it is essential to develop versatile skill sets to capitalize on these opportunities fully. ⁤⁤This involves acquiring proficiency in one or more foreign languages to connect with the ASEAN countries, honing interpersonal soft skills, and intentionally seeking diverse exposure across different countries through exchanges, internships, or travel. Decades later, despite a different set of circumstances and challenges, individuals will find themselves in a region experiencing growth, equipped with transferable competencies developed over the years.

⁤Concluding his speech, Mr Ho presented a challenge to the audience: to engage with at least three distinct countries before reaching the age of thirty, to embrace diverse perspectives and experiences. ⁤⁤Make a personal commitment to understanding how various cultures function, recognise the transformative impact of residing in different countries and direct interactions with people of diverse backgrounds. ⁤

In closing, I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to engage with such a platform to glean invaluable insights from leaders across diverse industries. As a passionate hiker with a strong inclination towards global exposure, I consider such platforms to be invaluable, and I wholeheartedly encourage more individuals to participate. Lastly, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the organisers and all participants for the success of this enriching and meaningful hike.
